5/12 Apple Ditches the AI Race for OpenAI
Apple Users Can Now Use ChatGPT with Siri for Smarter Queries
Good morning!
TL;DR Android/Windows users: skip this iteration. Apple users: if you want to access ChatGPT through Siri, this might be a cool addition.
Today, we got ChatGPT in Apple Intelligence. We can now ask Siri complex queries, which will be redirected to ChatGPT. You can then open them inside the ChatGPT app to continue the discussion. On the iPhone 16, you can use the "Visual Intelligence" feature with the Camera Control button to ask OpenAI models about the contents of a picture you took.
That’s pretty much it. It's somewhat nice for Apple device users (mainly for convenience, as it reduces access friction to the service). Try it if you want to enable it on your iPhone/iPad or Mac settings, and ask Siri. On MacOS, it's already less useful, as you could already set up a keyboard shortcut to access the ChatGPT app.
It's a bit underwhelming, and there's not much to say for this one, so we won’t bullsh*t you adding fake hype. That’s all you had to know about it.
On a side note, it’s funny how OpenAI is collaborating with both Apple and Microsoft. Both companies decided not to pursue the frontier LLM competition route and instead cooperate with one of the best players in the game.
At least Google, Meta, and some other companies have decided to invest millions and millions of dollars in this race so that we do not have a monopoly! It’s hard to say what’s the best decision for these big companies, but having seen Apple and Microsoft invest so much in AI research, it’s surprising to see this call being made.
See you tomorrow!
Ah, here’s the updated Bingo sheet (no progress today):
P.S. Sam foreshadowing a future announcement while saying “We do have a faster image generator incoming” ?! Does this mean a new DALL-E version? 🤞
